We as students at the University of Huddersfield and members of Huddersfield Students' Union should not be represented by a man with ties to organised child sexual exploitation and assault. Prince Andrew's association with a known paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, whose house the Duke of York visited two years after Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor - paying to rape a child - combined with the allegations made by Virginia Giuffre that Prince Andrew sexually assaulted her make him an utterly unsuitable representative for us here at the University of Huddersfield. Royal author Andrea Levin has already called for him to be suspended from royal duties - we can and should do the same and find a Chancellor who better represents the values we hold.
We need to put survivors of sexual assault above royal connections and show students, alumni, and prospective students that this institution cares about their well-being, irrespective of the status of the alleged perpetrator.
There has already been a call for him to resign based on his attitude towards Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, and now this. What message does this send about the University? Is this the type of person who should be representing us?
I stand with Virginia Giuffre and call for Prince Andrew to resign.
