Our Halls Team are there to make sure get your voice heard where you live. Our team of volunteer Halls Reps is ever growing, and as the team grows, we are able to challenge the Halls and the Accommodation providers to make sure each of you is receiving value for money and the best possible service available. In order to better represent you, we have tried to recruit as diverse a Halls Rep team as possible. The Team aims to: break down language barriers, provide opportunities for international friendships to grow and through regular conversation, develop a better understanding of the needs and wants of each and every student. Our Halls Team are becoming more and more recognised within their individual halls, however they wanted to introduce themselves to the whole student population…

Where are you from?

My name is Ashley and I am the Halls Assistant and Block Rep for Storthes Hall Park and I am from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

What course/level are you studying?

I’m currently in my second year at the University of Huddersfield and am studying Behavioural Sciences.

Why did you decide to become a Halls Assistant?

I am Block Rep for Storthes Hall Park. There are 10 Block Reps living on site and we are either in our second or third year of University.

Our main role is to support new students and to help them settle into University life.  We deliver weekly activities such as football, dance and a running club, to name a few, and plan bigger events such as quiz nights and UV parties at our on-site social space, The Venue. We also explore different parts of the UK with free monthly trips. Since September we’ve visited York, the Lake District, Whitby, Ikea and there’s more in the pipeline! The events and trips are free for Storthes Hall Park students and also over 7 fitness classes per week! As you can see there is never a dull moment at Storthes Hall Park!

What do you love about where you live?

The sense of community at Storthes Hall Park has always been my favourite part of living here. The Venue, on-site gym and shop all create a friendly campus where you are always bumping into other students and making friends.

What has been your favourite accommodation based event or activity so far this year?

My favourite event at Storthes Hall Park to date has got to be Bling Your Block! During the day students came together to decorate Christmas Trees across the campus. Once the trees were decorated, we paraded around site with a brass band and had a Christmas light switch on. Later in the night we played party games, drank mulled wine and ate festive snacks.

Why do you enjoy being a Halls Assistant?

I became interested in becoming a Halls Assistant for Storthes Hall Park because I enjoy meeting new people and was keen be more involved in the Students’ Union as they do so much to support students during their time at Huddersfield University.

Where are you from?

Wakefield – West |Yorkshire

What course/level are you studying?

Logistics and Supply Chain Management (4th Year)

Why did you decide to become a Halls Assistant?

I wanted to make a difference to help students and get everyone involved in the Students Union. I also wanted to work for an ethical employer who would understand that my studies are my priority

What do you love about where you live?

There is always someone to collect a parcel. It’s also close to the university and the town centre which is great.

What has been your favourite accommodation based event or activity so far this year?

I really enjoyed the ping pong tournament at the beginning of the year. There was a great atmosphere.

Why do you enjoy being a Halls Assistant?

I love knowing I’m making a difference and having a positive impact on the student experience

Where are you from?

I’m from Sheffield, or a small town in-between Sheffield and Lincoln.

What course/level are you studying?

I’m studying Adult Nursing (BSc)

Why did you decide to become a Halls Assistant?

I decided to do this job to gain friends and have a bigger insight into what happens around the uni. I also wanted a job with flexibility, that I could fit around my studies and placement.

What do you love about where you live?

I love living at Sawmill because of its location, it has shops within a two-minute walk away, it’s a 10-minute walk to uni and 15 minutes to town. There is also a bus stop right outside which is perfect for me getting to and from my placement.

What has been your favourite accommodation based event or activity so far this year?

I’ve really enjoyed attending events organised by the other Halls Assistants at their accommodation. My favourite events at Sawmill have been the badminton sessions and the recent Valentines tea party.

Why do you enjoy being a Halls Assistant?

I enjoy being a halls assistant because I have made some lovely friends whilst working for the SU, it has also made me feel more settled living in Huddersfield due to having a wider knowledge of what is happening around me.

We'd also like to introduce Linlin, our International Student Engagement Assistant, here to help make sure that the SU is as welcoming and inclusive to our international members as possible!

Where are you from?

My name is Linlin and I’m from China

What course /level are you studying?

International business

Why did you decide to become a halls assistant?

Lots of international students need help with their accommodation and other aspects of student life so far from home. I want to help international students avoid being exploited, and I found out that the Students’ Union can help students’ in so many ways. My plan is to: encourage more Chinese students to join in with Students’ Union activities; to feel comfortable using the table tennis, games consoles and chill out space on Floor 5; and to know that when they are having problems, the SU is here to help.

What do you love about where you live?

I'm living in a private house. The benefit of living in a house is that it’s like having a family. I live with my friend in the house and we can chat, eat and watch TV together. I'm don’t feel lonely or bored.

Why do you enjoy being an International Student Engagement Assistant?

Because I can help Students’ Union do better to support and represent international students. ALL the staff are nice!
