In just two weeks, ten music students from the university will be joining the rest of the Huddersfield Marathon Band in marching (and playing!) the Virgin London Marathon for the deaf blind charity SENSE.
In 2011, the Huddersfield Marathon Band marched the London Marathon and claimed the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon time by a marching band and raised over £30,000. After the record was beaten by a German band, they decided, under the band’s director Mike Lomas, to do it all again with the aim to reclaim the record and this time raise over £60,000!
The marathon band support SENSE as they do unbelievably inspirational work for the deaf-blind. Leader of the Huddersfield Team Dan Barker said “As musicians, we take for granted the gifts of sight and sound. SENSE do incredible work raising awareness and helping those not fortunate enough to have these gifts”.
So far the band has promoted themselves with countless fundraising efforts – everything from pub quizzes to golf days!
They also received a high profile support from the likes of Ex-Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, Sue Perkins and university Chancellor Patrick Stewart.
This week you can meet the band every day in the Central Services Building and we are also promoting a SENSE-Ational week which includes:
Pub Quiz: Tuesday
Pub Crawlection: Wednesday
Mystery Event: Friday
This close to the event we need your support more than ever! You can follow the bands progress and donate at: www.justgiving.com/hmb2014
