► Recycling

Huddersfield Students' Union takes great interest in its impact on the environment. In doing so we encourage all members to recycle and provide facilities in and around the union building to do so. We are proud to announce that none of the waste generated within the union goes to landfill and that we recycle 100% of our waste in various ways.

Glass

All the glass waste we generate within the bars etc is sent, via our waste management partner Leeds Paper Recycling (LPR), to a local processing plant to be crushed and used in the remaking of float glass or various glass products along with any waste being used in the road building materials.

Plastics

All types of plastics from bottles to packaging are processed into plastic pellets, then used to make wheelie bins, fall pipes, drain pipes and other pressed plastic products.

Aluminium Cans

All our aluminium is processed back into more aluminium products.

Paper/Cardboard

The retail division of the union generates a lot of waste cardboard whilst the offices generate a fair amount of waste paper. All this waste is compacted into bales and sent, via our waste management partners LPR. Paper grades are baled and predominantly sent to UK Mills. LPR
do send some to mills in Europe for use in new paper products. They also send some paper grades to animal bedding companies in the UK.

Rubble / Soil / Bricks / Stone

Rubble, Soil, Bricks and Stone are bulked and sent for use in the aggregate industry.

Waste Food

Our uncontaminated food waste is composted.

Wood

LPR send wood in bulk to a local wood recycler only 3 miles from their MRF for use in new furniture.

General Waste

Whilst we appreciate the effort that everyone puts into making sure that the recyclable materials go into the various collection points made available, some materials do end up in the general waste. This is re-sorted at the waste management site before the non recyclable waste is sent to Sita Energy from the waste site in Huddersfield to be incinerated creating power back into the national grid. Any ash deposits are used in the road building process.

So in essence we recycle 100%!

The Future

At the Students’ Union it is our aim, with the help off it’s members, to reduce the amount of waste we produce and reduce the Unions carbon footprint year on year. So keep up the good work.

Do You Know?

We also have facilities for recycling your old Batteries, Printer Cartridges (not Epsom) and Mobile Phones. Please bring them to the iZone, first floor in the Students' Union building where we will take them off you and put into the recycling programme.
