Summer Ball 2010

This year’s Summer Ball took place on Graduation Day at Walkabout. The night saw over 120 students, friends and family celebrate the year in style. The James Bond themed night kick started with funky Zetland Street Quartet playing a popular compilation of jazz covers.

JP Austin and Bruce Desmond were given recognition of their involvement with the Students’ Union by Head of Campus, Cathy Doggett. JP had been elected as Campus Chair for 2009/2010. He attended and led Campus Committee Meetings, created links with local businesses, attended Union Council, attended University Student Council and raised money for charity. Bruce was elected as Ordinary Member for 2009/2010. Bruce has attended Campus Committee Meetings, gathered and acted upon Student Opinion.

The highlight of the evening was for Graduate Marian Medley. Marian had been elected as Campus Chair for 2008/2009 and Course Representative for all three years of her studies. Marian has worked hard to benefit students at the University Campus Barnsley.

Some of her achievements have included:

·         Being a past Campus Committee Chair
·         Being a course rep
·         Attending Student Council
·         Attending University Student Council in both Huddersfield and Barnsley
·         Working to support the Union and the University during the QAA
·         Campaigning for a second parade at this year’s graduation
·         Setting up an annual University Campus Ball
·         Campaigning for better Common room facilities in Barnsley

For Marian’s hard work and effort, Head of Campus, Cathy Doggett presented her with Honorary Life Membership to the Students’ Union and the UHSU Outstanding Contribution to the Students’ Union Award. The Outstanding Contribution Award is one of the Unions most prestigious awards and is given to someone that has gone above and beyond their role in the Union. (This was awarded at the STARS Awards Evening in Queensgate however Marian was unable to attend)

The evening continued with some more music from Zetland Street Quartet, resident DJ, and buffet. The casino table also proved to be a popular attraction with an iPod shuffle and bottle of Jagermeister being won by two students with the most UCB Summer Ball Pounds.

Graduation Parade Success

This is the first time that Barnsley has had two ceremonies due to the number of final year students. Initially students were shocked at the news that students chosen for the second ceremony were not going to receive the experience of parading in front of friends, family and the local community from Campus to the Civic. Marian quickly rallied students gaining enough support and momentum to overturn the Universities decision. Many thanks are given to Head of Campus Cathy Doggett for making the graduation dreams of students become a reality.
