You might have heard about an exciting new volunteering project we’re running in conjunction with Kirklees Council to transform the Huddersfield and Colne Valley area. It all starts with an underpass in Slaithwaite (not the most glamorous-sounding location, but stick with us here) which we’ll be completely redecorating to transform it into something the local community can be proud of.

Here’s where you come in! To really make this idea come to life, we need a design that’s going to stand out and represent what the students of Huddersfield are capable of. To help us find said design, we’re running a competition for all ADA (Art, Design & Architecture) students to send us their ideas. The winner(s) will see their vision brought to life by an army of volunteers who they will lead! This amazing prize will look great in any portfolio and should give the successful individual/group plenty to talk about with future potential employers.

The competition is open to anyone in the ADA school, with the deadline for entries being Friday 26th February. Here’s all the info you need:

  • You can work on your own or in groups of up to three people.
  • The brief is pretty wide open, but we are looking for something bright and uplifting.
  • Designs must consider and incorporate the culture of the local area and Slaithwaite, so do a bit of research before getting your creative juices flowing!
  • Suggestions include incorporating features such as canals, railways, mills, chimneys and cottages which might give you a feel for what we’re after.
  • Submit your design to in .PDF format by Friday 26th February
  • See below for the dimensions of the underpass.

Entries will be judged by a panel consisting of VP Comms & Engagement George, a local councillor and a design lecturer from the University, so bring your A-game and get designing!
