► Students' Union Advice - FAQ

1. What is the Safety Bus and when does it run?

The Safety Bus is a service provided by the Students' Union to transport students from the campus to their accommodation (within the Huddersfield area.) The service, operated by the Students’ Union, runs in the evening during term time.

Timetables will be available at the start of term from the Students' Union reception or on the website at www.huddersfield.su/safetybus

2. Can I park on the campus?

Parking on campus is only available to students with disabilities and even this is limited. For further information please contact Disability Services on 01484 473724 or email disability@hud.ac.uk

There are other places to park around the town centre. You can find more details by visiting Kirklees Council's website at: www.kirklees.gov.uk/transport/parking/parkingmenu.shtml

3. How do I join Huddersfield Students' Union?

When you enrol as a student at the University of Huddersfield you automatically become a member of Huddersfield Students' Union unless you opt out. You will be given the chance to opt out during the enrolment procedure.

As a student you can also apply for an NUS Extra card. For more details visit www.huddersfield.su/nusextra

NUS extra cards are also available to purchase online at www.nus.org.uk/en/NUS-extra/

4. Can I get any help with health costs?

Students are not automatically eligible for help with health costs, for example prescriptions or dental treatment etc. There are certain situations when you may be entitled to help but for most students they will need to apply to see if they are eligible under the NHS Low Income Scheme. To apply you can pick up an application form (HC1) and the guidance notes from the Students' Union Advice Centre. The application will be subject to an income assessment.

For further information on the scheme contact the Customer Enquiry Line on 0845 850 1166 or visit www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_4091546

5. Where can I get a Council Tax Exemption certificate?

During enrolment you will be able to ask for a Council Tax Exemption Certificate from the Help Desk. At other times they are available from the Student Centre, level 4 CSB. For more information on eligibility, visit the University’s website at: www2.hud.ac.uk/aro/enrolment2/council_tax_exemption_certificates.php

6. Where can I collect an application form for the Access to Learning Fund?

Application forms will be available from the start of term and can be downloaded via the University Student Finance Office website at www2.hud.ac.uk/student_finance/alf/

If you have problems accessing this, you can collect a copy from the Student Centre on level 4 CSB or from the Students' Union Advice Centre.

For students studying on the campus in Barnsley and Oldham, you can collect a copy from the Students’ Union office on each campus.

7. I am having problems with my accommodation/landlord, who can I speak to for help?
