► Personal Safety

According to statistics students are one of the most likely groups to fall victim to crime.

  • Students own more expensive consumer goods per head than the rest of the population.
  • 1 in 3 students become the victim of a crime each year
  • Crimes most affecting students are: mugging, vehicle related theft and burglary.

By taking a few simple precautions you can make sure that you are not such an easy target!

Top Personal Safety Tips (when you are out and about)

  • Try to look confident when you are out and about (even if you don’t feel it!)

  • Stay alert and don’t take short cuts – keep to main, well lit roads

  • Try to always walk with a friend

  • Always plan ahead and let someone know the route you will be taking and what time you expect to arrive.

  • Don’t walk home alone at night. Use the Students’ Union Safety Bus or pre book a taxi.

  • Before going out always let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be home.

  • Don’t carry a lot of cash on you and try to use the ATMs during the day.

  • Do not display valuable items such as mobiles, cash and jewellery and try to disguise laptops when carrying them around.

  • Never leave your belongings unattended.

  • Carry your bag away from the road but if it gets snatched, let it go.

  • Buy a personal attack alarm and carry it with you – these are available from the Students’ Union Shop.

  • If you do think that you are being followed, cross the street and keep on walking heading towards somewhere where there are more people.

  • When walking home either in the day or at night, Kirklees Council have outlined a student safer walking route
