By taking a few simple precautions you can make sure that you are not such an easy target!
Top Personal Safety Tips (when you are out and about)

Try to look confident when you are out and about (even if you don’t feel it!)

Stay alert and don’t take short cuts – keep to main, well lit roads

Try to always walk with a friend

Always plan ahead and let someone know the route you will be taking and what time you expect to arrive.

Don’t walk home alone at night. Use the Students’ Union Safety Bus or pre book a taxi.

Before going out always let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be home.

Don’t carry a lot of cash on you and try to use the ATMs during the day.

Do not display valuable items such as mobiles, cash and jewellery and try to disguise laptops when carrying them around.

Never leave your belongings unattended.

Carry your bag away from the road but if it gets snatched, let it go.

Buy a personal attack alarm and carry it with you – these are available from the Students’ Union Shop.

If you do think that you are being followed, cross the street and keep on walking heading towards somewhere where there are more people.
