If you are sexually active it is really important that you look after your sexual health, making sure that you know how to protect yourself against sexually transmitted infections (STI) and understand the facts about contraception.
You may think that if you had a STI you would know about it – this is not always the case. Chlamydia for example can be carried with no obvious symptoms so you may not realise that you have it and if it is left untreated it can cause serious health problems and affect fertility.STDs/STIs affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and from all walks of life. Getting the facts about STDs/STIs and sexual health is increasingly important. Listed below are some local and national organisations which specialise in the various aspects of Sexual Health and can provide you with further information.
The Student Advice and Information Centre has lots of information available on sexual health issues and holds awareness events during the course of the academic year so call in to find out more. If you cannot make it into the Centre then why not visit www.fpa.org.uk for lots of useful information and advice on how to stay safe and keep healthy.
Don’t forget that if you do have any questions or are worried then you can always talk to the doctor or nurse at your GP surgery. You may find that they have separate sessions for sexual health and contraception issues. Alternatively you can get in touch with your local clinic – you can find their contact details by visiting www.fpa.org.uk.
